My Body is NOT Your Crime Scene!
On the 1st of August 2018, women and gender non-conforming people (GNC) from all over South Africa will shut down the country and march in protest against gender-based violence. Lesotho and Botswana will also form part of the mass action.
We have nothing to celebrate on 9 August. Every week, we receive multiple reports of women, children, and gender non-conforming people who have been brutally murdered, kidnapped, or abused, and there is no sense of urgency from our leaders to find ways in which society can tackle this violence. Women including the LGBTQIA+, children, and GNC people keep dying at the hands of men in South Africa, and something needs to be done.
We call on all women and GNC people to stay away from work and join the protest on 1 August 2018 in their respective provinces, Universities, and colleges and not buy anything on the day.
Those who are receiving their grants on the day are encouraged to use ATM’s in the mornings and head their way to their respective march starting points.
If you can’t march, please step away from work for a moment of solidarity from 13:00 to 13:30 or longer if possible.
A memorandum of demands will be handed over to the government, Parliament, the Supreme Court of Appeal and other provincial and regional structures. With action steps to be taken to deal with gender-based violence and make the country safe.
Employers are requested to release all women and gender-non conforming people from their work duties to be part of the shutdown.
Men are encouraged to support the movement by staying away from work and not buying anything on that day to shut down the economy.
If you wish to join our nationwide marches, be sure to order your t-shirt and hoodies for #TheTotalShutdown march.
