Portia Kobue started her career in the electronic media at Radio Bop, in 1993. Starting off as a writer on the English News desk, she accumulated most of her radio skills through on-the-job training.
In 1995, after undergoing training at the Institute For the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) in Parktown, she was awarded a scholarship to the Deutsche Welle Radio Training Centre in Cologne, Germany. She joined the SABC in October 1995, working as a reporter, Current Affairs producer and presenter in Setswana. In between there was a series of in-house training by the Thompson Foundation, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and many others, that she took advantage of, to sharpen her skills as a broadcaster and journalist. A year later in November 1996, she joined commercial radio station Highveld Stereo, as a reporter. She was promoted to senior reporter within a year, and a year later, she took charge of the News room as editor. During her six years with the company, she attended several Management and development courses, in her quest to improve herself. She obtained a diploma in Management at the Wits Business School. And she continued to further her career through workshops and leadership courses at the IAJ, and in 2000, was awarded another scholarship, to learn advanced news production, power reporting and News room leadership skills, at the Poynter Institute in Florida, USA. Ms Kobue was elected the secretary general of the South African National Editors' Forum in 2003. She participates in debates, and forums aimed at improving the standard of journalism. She is also a part-time Radio News trainer. In 2004 she attended a Reuters Course on reporting HIV/AIDS in Brazil. She spearheads Kaya FM News strategy to produce gender-balanced news reports, and to increase the number of news on women in business, development and other areas where women are historically and culturally marginalized.
